I’m having trouble getting a good edge when jointing long boards on my 6″ Jet jointer ’cause it only has a 46″ bed. What should I do? a) keep what I have and improve my technique, b)get the 6″ Powermatic w/ a 66″bed c) get an 8″ jet or d) take up knitting……..cheers! mark

Mark I have got good results with checking the edge of boards that length by 1st placing it on edge on the workbench to see if that long edge is concave or convex. Then I set a long straight edge along the edge of the board, clamp it and shave the edge off with my circle saw. When I run it through the joiner it works great. Make sure that you keep good down pressure on the front of the board and lift the back of the board enough to keed that pressure on the front of the board as it enters the cutter.
Bout 6' long is the longest i do on my Jet 6". Have done 8' once or twice. Really need outfeed rollers for that.

I have been successful jointing 7 ft boards with my 6 in. machine (46 in. long +/-). It takes a little practice supporting the wood and guiding it across the bed. I tried rollers but it is difficult to get the roller adjusted to the correct height and level with the bed. Also, the curvature of the board edge (which is what you are trying to remove) will change the angle of the board as it rides along the roller.
I support the trailing edge of the board with my right hand and try to guide it with my left. I also increase the depth of cut just to speed up the process (if the board has a lot material to remove). If I am going to edge glue, I finish with my jointer plane.
