Either the vacuum is not strong enough, has too small a hose or the dust chute is clogged. Shavings from softwood like pine are pretty stringy and will clog up a small orifice quickly.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
thanks, i'll check it out. dan
jumpin' you always get to the bottom of the problem so quickly! You must be a truly gifted wood worker!!

I let my shavings go on the floor and use them to start a wood fire in my shop............works great as fire tinderWicked Decent Woodworks

Probably something clogged up. What size vac are you using? The jointer (6" size anyway) seems to be the one machine that a vacuum works pretty well with. I had mine hooked up to a 16GAL old Craftsman indoor/outdoor vac, 2.5" hose I think? and it worked great.

I have a 12" jointer, with a 1450 cfm dust collector hooked to it, and I still get some shavings blown back. Unless you hook a 747 to it, I doubt you'll get all the shavings, I never have. Now, if there are a lot of shavings, then you might be clogged.

THANKS JEFF, NICE TO KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. DAN
I'd think it it NORMAL.. Well at least with the most EXPENSIVE wood ya have.. Sort of like LIFE!
I had this happen when I was planning some spruce. I was using a Dewalt 12 1/2" thicknesser, and the shavings were very long and stringy. What I ended up doing is cutting off those little grates that "block the inlet on the dust collector. Everything is dandy now.

"block the inlet on the dust collector..That is to keep little hands out of there! Sorry, I had to..
That is alright,
It works better nonetheless.

I have the same jointer but no vacuum system. My last project using pine and spruce it plugged up and started blowing back as your system. I shut the system down, unplugged the motor and reached in the shute and cleaned it out. Problem solved. Never had that problem with hardwood.
