I AM THINKING OF BUYING A JOINTER. MY QUESTION IS, DO I NEED TO BUY A FULL SIZE 6″ PROFESSIONAL JOINTER OR WOULD THE DELTA 6″ VARIABLE-SPEED BENCH JOINTER BE GOOD ENOUGH. THE PRICE ISN’T REALLY THE ISSUE. I WOULD RATHER SPEND THE MONEY NOW, THEN LATER ON WISH THAT I DID. THE ONLY REASON I AM CONSIDERING THE BENCH TOP IS DUE TO THE LACK OF SPACE IN MY WORKSHOP.

Spend the money now, or latter you'll wish you did! ha..ha..
Good Luck...

Here here! With Sarge on that one. If money really isn't an issue maybe look at the 8" as well. I got a six and it just galls me the amount of 6 1/2" stuff I want to face and can't. Look at the blade adjustment on them too while you're deciding. I won't get into pros and cons. Find out which one hurts your sensibilities less and go with it. I like the screws myself. Enough on that. Also look at whether or not they give you any tools with it for setting the knives. Seems simple enough, but some don't, and then you're either buying aftermarket setups or getting creative. My DW planer has these silly little plastic knobs with magnets in them, had to cost all of about two bucks. Darned if they don't work slick. Wish the jointer had the same. Go with a full-sized model. The "bench top" models are very inferior in quality and utility. Consider placing the jointer on a mobile base to move it to less valuable space when it's not in use.

Given the dimensions of a jointer, I think you'll be surprised how little actual floor space it takes up. I have my Jet 6" on an old furniture dolly that was laying around, about 18" wide by, maybe 16"? deep. If I want to, I can store it against a wall and have my planer, vacuum, scrap bin or whatever underneath the tables on the right an left. It's pretty easy to move around (way easier than the tablesaw).
I agree with others that you'll probably regret it if you buy a benchtop jointer.
You are going to want to hook up a vacuum or dust collector to it. I've found the jointer to be the easiest tool to collect shavings (not really much dust there) from. Don't even need an air-tight fit with my old but big vacuum. With no collection, the shavings back up into the top of the cabinet and come out through the blade opening, not good.

Sawboss,
I money is not an issue, I would definitely go with the floor standing joiner.. I second the option that I would also strongly consider purchasing a 8 inch joiner instead of the 6 inch..
