In memory of the late Jon Arno, a noted wood technologist, Fine Woodworking author, and Knots contributor, we have put together a feature that compiles Knots posts by Arno where he shares a wealth of information about the properties of common and not-so-common woods.
I’ll continue to update this thread when links to more archived wood definitions are added. If you come across an old post by Arno that you think we should know about, please let us know by posting the thread number to this discussion.

Matt,
This a fitting tribute to a true gentleman of wood. Even though I never met him (except through Knots), when I had a wood I could not identify, I would send a piece to Jon and he would call me and we would discuss it, even when he was quite ill. He would not accept payment for his consultations; he just enjoyed his field of knowledge and wanted to share it with all. May he rest in peace.

I have been looking through my old FWW lately just for fun, inspiration and information. Jon's articles, letter replies and project were always well written and entertaining. I particularly fondly remember the rather heated debate between Jon and Scott Landis regarding tropical hardwoods and their use/misuse in the 25th anniversary issue...whew! Rick
Matt, I have an email that Jon sent me that gave some details on spalting wood -- stuff he didn't post on Knots, IIRC. I would be glad to send it to you if you'd like to add the info to this body of knowledge. Thanks for gather everything together for us!

FG, that would be great. send it over. I am going to take some time after the new year to add a few more of John's posts to the running article. I have actually collected more than 30 pages worth that I plan to publish over the next few months...
Hi FG,
Any reason not to post here?

Hi JD. I could post it here, but I think it's be better to get it in with the other stuff and not confuse this thread. Do I have your email?? I'll check and send you the note.
