Ever have one of those days when things just dont go right? Here I am building a childs windsor for a customer. All the parts are made and I am assembling. What do I do but drill the hole for the stretcher tennon right through on of the legs. I heve never done this before in all the chairs I have built No big deal rigt?.just make another leg!! Ummmmm……….no. Just broke 2 legs in the lathe. Where did I put that bourbon? ( and before you say it…no! Its 9;45 am and I dont start that early!)

CHERRYJOHN ,
I can relate , some days in my shop most everything I touch goes to heck , so to speak .Even simple things go haywire . Usually at that point I pick a corner or another unkempt area and do some clean up. I rarely screw up when doing shop clean up. My beginings came from restoration works and I did learn several ways to repair and save broken spindles , rungs and others lathe turnings . I guess it could be called the "inner game of woodworking" the Inner Game is a book originally printed towards the game of tennis . Golfer Ben Hogan wrote a book called Power Golf ,and he talked about how on some days his fingers and hands just felt fat , and he said he did not do as well with the fat fingers and such . So maybe we need to check them out before we do any serious woodworking . Was this one of those times where you became a conversationalist by yourself in your shop ?
happy holidays dusty
No, it started out overdrilling that stretcher tennon hole. Then it went from bad to worse. I came in from the shop, sat down, gave my wife some crap for daring to request that I brush off that sawdust before comming into the house....was generally in a foul mood for about an hour then when the dust settled ( and the saw dust was shook off) I gave it another go. Guess what? the piece came out about as good as I heve ever done! Whats up with that anyway ??? I have been expecting this project to break in some unrepairable way ever since but so far so good. Stay tuned .......the way this project is going I will surely mess up again.
"Whats up with that " you know I am convinced that just as it seems true that some pieces of wood need to be worked different than others , some simply don't want to be worked at all . Have you ever noticed this phenomena ?. It sounds as though your wife likes a clean house as mine does. I can't tell you how many times I've been scolded for not brushing all the sawdust off of me before entering the house . Somehow after blowing off usually with the air hose and walking about 150 feet up from the shop to the house, I still have sawdust on me , it's a miracle . Try not expecting a project to fail , but see it done the way you intend . Easier said then done .
a very dusty one
Would this whole past week qualify as "one of those days"?? Last weekend, I finished all the wood working on a computer desk for my daughter and her fiance. Darn thing is absolutely beautiful!!! Birch with flat panels in the pedestal. On Monday, we go pick out a stain (Minwax Red Oak) and when I stain it up on Tuesday it turns into a total POS. The solid wood came out fine but the plywood parts just wouldn't stain right.
I've used Minwax stains for years, but haven't used a deeply colored stain for a long time and i was fighting with it all the way. I spent part of this morning messing with it and it looks like I'll be making a new top. Tomorrow, I'll see what (if anything) I can do with the panels in the pedestal.
I'm going to spend the next 2hrs and 12 minutes on the computer then have a serious drink.........maybe two. Tomorrow will be a better day.............won't it??
Thanks for listening - lol
