My cigar store purchased a newly carved cigar store indian, beautifully done in a solid, mahogany or brazilian walnut log. It came from a humid, tropical zone to our desert climate. It is in an entry way and all ready starting to crack and split. Most of it is painted or oiled, but the back of the headress and bottom are not.
Any suggestions on care and maintenance and preventing splitting or cracking would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the real problem may be that the log was not dried and cured before carving. Our children had an antique store in Denver and had trouble with some large trunk tops splitting when they first got there. Eventually stopped. I don't think there is much you can do but I will be interested if someone has a solution.
*Salmo,Even if the log was dried and seasoned, coming from a tropical climate into an arid one will cause splitting. It might have reached equilibrium there but, is now trying to reach equilibrium where you are. When wood wants to move, it will and there is no stopping it.You might want to try oiling it with boiled linseed oil once a week, though I don't think this will be much help. The only other alternative that I can think of is putting it in the walk in humidor, if space allows. FWIW.Dano
