I’m trying to refinish my front door with spar varnish. I sand the final coats with 320, 400 and finer grit paper. However I try to clean off the dust I cannot keep it out of the finish. What am I doing wrong? Is the sanding dust getting stuck in the finish? How can I get a dust free finish?
Help, Dan

Dan,
A couple of things you can do;
Vacuum the door after you get done sanding it. Wipe it down a tack rag or clean cotton cloth and vacuum it again. Pay particular attention where the corners of panels meet. They are notorious for holding sanding dust.
Vacuum the area where you are working and sprinkle some water around, it will help keep the dust down.
Make sure you are not the culprit and have a clean apron on.
What type of brush are you using? Believe it or not, I use foam brushes when varnishing doors. They leave no brush marks. Just don't press it down to the bottom of your varnish when loading it so you don't introduce lots of bubbles. (Then you'll have another problem.)
Good luck.

Thanks for your help. However, since you mention bubbles, I am beginning to suspect that what I think is dust, really may be bubbles.
