Hi,
I have a Star tools eight inch jointer that is belt driven. The key that holds the wheel on the motor, falls out. There is no place on the drive shaft for a locking washer. I have tried using a nail set to expand the pin, but this has not worked. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if I understand the situation; Are you talking about the pulley on the motor shaft & the wedge shaped "key" that somehow holds it in? If so, and it's a friction type of situation, you might try roughing up the mating surfaces with some sort of abrasive or file, then pounding the key in. I've also heard of people using "polishing compound" - a gritty paste - to create grip between metal surfaces. It's the same technology used in machine shops when engine cylinders are ground to increase compression. You might also try a "metal etch" product like those sold in paint stores, Though I don't know if it would work well on hardened steel.
If none of this makes sense/applies to you, maybe you can go a different route, and drill holes in the collar of the wheel, then tap them for set screws.
Try loc-tite it's cheap and it works. Get the blue rather than the red. Follow the instructions and your problem should be solved!

I would think the KeyWay setscrew hole is messed up somehow..
If you have time.. Get a 'bottoming TAP' and run throught the setscrew hole again..
TAKE your time and use CUTTING OIL! Never break that TAP!
If I understand you correctlly, you are speaking of the keyway shaft sliding out of the groove. Look at the motor pulley, there should be one setscrew, usually an allen head screw. This setscrew should be aligned over the keyway and tightened. Use locktite if the setscrew vibrates loose. It is possible that the setscrew is missing or the keyway is the wrong size. Most keyways are 3/16'x3/16". Worst case is to remove the pulley, take it to a hardware store and match up a new keyway and setscrew. The motor shaft groove and the pulley shaft groove should be the same width.

Check the keyway in the pully to see if is worn oversize .f it is i do not think you will ever keep it from coming loose. I used to have a tablesaw that did the same thing . it had a diecast pullyand the keyway was worn. I replaced the pully with a steel machine pully and a new key that solved the problem
Have a nice day Lee
