My neighbor has discarded a large root (10″-12″ diameter by 2′-3′), probably from a maple. It is curved and has a few branchings into it. It is big and heavy looking. Is there a chance that I’d get interesting grain into this piece or would I just waste my time lugging and milling this piece?

I once turned a small enclosed bowl from a root, apple I think it was, and the grain was interesting but not very pretty as I remember. I think it had some small bits of rock or sand in it too. I'l try to find a picture. When I smoked a pipe I had a lot of straight grained pipes that were turned from briar roots and they were beautiful.
Roots can ingest rocks so take care working it.
