I am interested in making a king size bed – more interested in a decent headboard – I liked the Shaker style in the Jeff Miller BEDS by Taunton Press – but he doesn’t recommend it for a king size bed. No explaination. I could do without the large foot board. any thoughts?
thank you

Hi, Joe
I built the Shaker style bed shown by Jeff Miller in his Taunton Press Book, "Beds."
I built a model first and its proportions looked fine and I went ahead and built the bed.
It is about a year and a half old now and is a nice looking piece and sleeps just fine.
The way I arrived at the size for the King Size version was to build it to standard King Size dimensions.
Obviously the width of the bed makes incorporating a longitudinal support in the midline ----so that the slats won't give/bow significantly under load---- imperative.
Let me know if I can be of any help.
William.
First lets see if I can attach a picture because without it my description maybe for nothing. I built a headboard log style using a saddle blanket suspended between two horizontal poles. Around this headboard I built a pier group with light bar. the pier group is tongue and groove pine with a poplar face plate ( I should have used oak) I wanted a harder wood in the event I ever put doors on it. This is a California king bed.
Pier group and and king size headboard
Hi Joe,
Norm built a very nice mahogany king size headboard this season. Not Shaker style though. You can check it out at newyankee.com.
