Hi all,
I’m faced with about 24 cabinets total that I want to finish the carcase interiors with a water based poly and I don’t have a spray system. I do have a 2 hp. Campbell Hausfield Extreme Duty pancake compressor (rated at 4 gal capacity; 3.1 cfm at 90 PSI or 4.1 cfm at 40 PSI) . Is there a gun out there for a hundred dollars or so that will put out a finish of water based Polyurethane at least as good as brushing it on?
Also, If I spray, is it possible to do a decent job with the carcases assembled?
Thanks! Dave

Dave I wrote response at BT but like I said there. I spray mine with the backs removed. I mentioned at BT about different options but the one I think would do you right is the C&H Serious Duty turbine outfit. I just sold mine to up grade but it was a good system not great but good. It was originally 300 bucks but the HD is closeing them out and selling them for 150 bucks. So you might have to go to a couple of HD to find them. I did 2 full kitchens and a number of projects with mine. A friend of mine who is a pro carp who does high end work uses the same system( We bought them the same time) so I know it will work for ya. You cant go wrong with this system at that price.
At Darkworks Customer satisfaction Job One..Yea yea were all over it , I ll have it done by next Tuesday Oh yea I need another draw.........
Have you bought the plywood for the cabinets yet? If not, you might consider buying pre finished plywood. I know it comes in Maple and Cherry, maybe some other species as well. It really is a time saver, and if you have a supplier you work with, it's not that expensive. I buy 3/4" Maple for $68/sheet, good 1 side, but I forget what the cost is for good 2 sides.
Thanks guys for your feedback. I'll pop off the backs before I do anything in the wayof fininishing and check into the CH unit. Didn't know plywood's came prefinished...too late for that this time.
Thanks again., Dave
I guess on the same note, it is possible to apply/roll poly to several plywood sheets before cutting them to size...?
Tes, I've done this before with both polyurethane and paint. But you still end up sanding and applying subsequent coats.
Two thoughts.
If you need a larger compressor for just one day or so, rent one and do it right!
Secondly, poly..and other kinds of varnish will leave a pretty nasty smell on the inside of cabinets/drawers...for months....maybe longer.
I use super blond shellac or lacquer...and get fast drying, no runs, easy touchup and no smell.
Good luck
lp
Hi Larry,
Question: Do you spray, or can the shellac be applied with a brush, roller, or paint pad. We're talking about just the interiors of the cases... Also, how well does that shellac finish hold up?
Thanks.
Dave
if already assembled I have used the paint pads with the clear finish and recieved good results. pre finished ply is available form the more special supplier.(for next time)
