Hey Guys,
I posted this in Breaktime too, but I’m interested in thoughts about my kitchen cabinet addition.
The kitchen is fairly small, so these cabinets will be a big upgrade. I’ve attached a plan of what I’m proposing, but I’m open to ideas too. Both these cabinets will match the existing ones in the kitchen.
I’ll probably go with fixed shelves to match the existing cabinets. The face frames on the exisitng cabinets are very small, so I might make the new ones wider. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks!

Corrib,
I build kitchen cabinets for a living. Some things you will want to take into consideration:
The tall cabinet on the left: These tall cabinets are usually 42" tall. Assuming you butt it to the ceiling, the bottom of the cabinet will be at 54" from the ground (that is if your ceiling is 96". 54"-54 1/2" from the floor is industry standard, but you don't necessarily have to follow industry standards. You will want to make the cabinet on the right 15" deep, instead of the usual 12" deep that most wall cabinets are. Unless you have a tiny microwave, it will look odd sticking out from under the cabinet. I would suggest getting the microwave first, or research the product specs for dimensions. Also, if you butt the cabs to the ceiling, that won't leave room for crown molding, you may have to drop them down an inch or two. As far as the face frames, I build my cabinets with 1 3/4" face frames, but I have seen 1 1/2" as well as 2" face frames. I don't think it makes as much difference, it's just aesthetics. Hope this helps, if you need anything or have more questions feel free to drop me a line: [email protected]

If you put a microwave above the range make sure it is an over the range type and it has to be a minimum of 66" (68" is better)from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet and 30" wide. An 120v electricial outlet has to mounted inside the cabinet flush with the back of the cabinet (just like a wall outlet). Yes, this cabinet is 12" deep and the microwave will stick out about 3" but that's the way over the range microwaves are made. If the cabinet is 15" deep the M/W has to moved foward to allow the door to open, if not you may get a door that will open less then 90 degress. Also,if you are venting it to the inside make sure you get a charcoal filter for it, the charcoal filter helps to get rid of the cooking odors.
Hi Corrib ,
Looks like a micro wave hood combo over the range ? The specs with these will call out at what height it gets installed . The MW combo's are deeper than 12 " usually so as has been said consider deeper boxes for added storage and a built in look for the MW .If you are using the combo use the rectangular venting up the back wall instead of a 7" round pipe , it will take less space out of the already small area .
good luck dusty
Your kitchen looks like what I'm working on now. On one wall I've got 60" between the refrigerator and the wall for sink cabinet. And on the other wall I've got 60" between entry door and wall for the stove. My preference is to maintain 18" between countertop and upper cabinets. Also, I can't convince myself to go taller than 30" for the uppers - thinking that if I can't easily reach the top shelf I would not use it.
