kitchen island on hidden casters
I am trying to come up with a method of making a kitchen island moveable for cleaning. The island will have skirt boards that come almost to the floor and adjustable legs to level the island. It needs to have casters that can be lowered to lift the island a quarter to a half an inch so it can be rolled out of the way to clean under. I need the island to be stationary but I can’t with a skirt lock and unlock the casters. Any suggestions- I estimate the counter weighs abour 300 pounds. it has a 1 1/2 inch 30×48″ butcher block top. Thanks

One way is to make the skirt removable for access to the locking mechanism on the wheels or to the leveling feet. If you use locking wheels only, I would only use wheels that are rubber. Even when locked, plastic/poly wheels will slide on a hard smooth surface such as a kitchen floor. Also, rubber wheels will not mar wood floors. If you don't want to make the skirt removable, I would use a combination of wheels and levelers that can be adjusted from the inside of the cabinet. Again, be sure that you are using solid rubber leveling feet.

A word of caution with rubber wheels............. A little horror story. We had an old TV that I had moved with a dolly with rubber wheels. I left it parked on our vinyl floor for a week or more while we figured out what to do with it. We now have permanent marks on the floor. If you notice car dealers put paper or rugs or something under the tires on the cars in the show rooms to prevent the black marks.
I made an island for my in-laws that they wanted to be able to move - they have a vinyl floor. I used teflon pads. You can either buy small blocks of teflon from a plastics dealer, or you may be able to buy stick-on pads. We use teflon in the manufacturing areas where I work, when we want a movable, but not too movable.
