Looking for some advice. I am in the process of building my first set of kitchen cabinets. Can anyone tell me what a “standard” dimension would be for the crown or cove moulding that would mount to the upper cabinets?
Secondly, I’m building them out of cherry and am looking for a finish that would give a rich brown yet still allow the red to show thru – any thoughts to this end would be appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance

Can't help with the first half of your e mail- but the second half- When finishing cherry I usually put one coat of linseed oil down first- before anything (this is assuming I am not going to color the wood with stains or dyes)
The linseed oil brings out the reds in the wood-I have tried experiments with the oil and without- it definitely makes a difference. I will then put my top coat on- usually waterlox original sealer finish. But- kitchen cabinets? a friend of mine used Waterlox gloss solvent based polyurethane- applied with a foam brush and then rubbed out with 4/0 steel wool- it looks great! and is a tougher finish than any oil.
Try it on a test before you do it on the real thing!!

In answer to your first question: there isn't a standard height, size or configuration. Whatever you put up there should look good with the doors beneath, on the upper cabinets. If they're shaker doors, with a 2.5-in-wide rail and stile, I've added a 2 to 3 or 4-in-high flat crown, with its face slightly proud of the face of the door's stiles. The crown is a matter of taste.

Thanks for the confirmation...I tried 2" and then bought some 3 1/2 - which I think is what I like the most. Doing this for the first time so I was just seeing what others have done.
Thanks again!
