I am trying to salvage a bunch (3000bf) of mixed hardwoods that has been infested with powder post beetles. I have contacted our local school of forestry and they say next to fumigation which is extremely expensive, raising the wood to 140 degrees will kill the larva. No klin will accept the wood since it is infested with the beetles. SO I am looking for some klin drying plans to see if I can do this myself.
Thanks

I used Boracare on some boards I salvaged from a friends barn. It's what the folks who restore barns use. Go to barnpeople.com. They wash the boards with TSP-Plus and then I think they spary on Boracare, but I used a brush. I think you'll want to invest in a sprayer with the amount of wood you have. It's supposed to be environmentally friendly. I think I got mine at http://www.bugspray.com, but I'm not sure. I think a big bottle was about $90.
If you elect to try it yourself, I'll suggest that you (1) preheat your kiln to about 120°F before loading and (2) on the more-is-better theory of dead bugs, kiln it at 160°F for a couple of weeks at minimum, a month would probably be even better.
I don't know about TSP, but when I had some butternut that had beetle holes (insect unknown) I soaked the wood in mineral spirits. As I have a bed made out of it, either it worked or I was lucky as h**l.
I'd also wonder how TSP would affect finishing. I've used it to clean walls prior to painting, with a clear water rinse afterward. For that it worked very well.
Good luck.
Leon, I use TSP when stripping kitchens and trim on site. If you rinse well, it's no problem.

Thanks, Woodwiz.I've got a kitchen that's going to get a makeover sometime in the future, that's good info to have.Leon Jester
I've written a couple of real windy descriptons of how to strip kitchens over the years. If you get curious, try a search here or on Wood Central. If I'm around, I'll be happy to answer questions, but it takes a long time as I type awfully slow. I'm thinking about learning to type with my toes -- might be faster and more accurate.........

New at this please excuse grammer. just a note on wood infestation. Good old borax works great and is cheap. have been using the mineral for 30 years and it seem to work for me. It is very important to seperate the bad from the good.( now there a memorable statement) liberal sprinkling on your wood stack & wraping in a cheap drop cloth.
