I’m making a humidor from PA cherry. I incorporated a knot to add some “character”. The knot hole itself is less than 3/8″ in diameter and the surrounding wood is tight. Do I need to fill it with something? If so what? The finish will be French polished garnett shellac over BOL. Thanks in advance. Best regards, Fred

Humidors can't tolerate
Humidors can't tolerate holes. They must be reasonably tight to maintain the desired relative humidity. I assume there is unfinished spanish cedar underneath, but I would still want to maintain the outer surface. Black epoxy is one frequent solution.
Thanks Steve. My worry was that even with the Spanish Cedar, (just 1/4" thick) the hole might be a problem. I'll epoxy it up tomorrow and go from there.
Best regards,
Fred
I usually fill mine with a mixture of colloidal silica and sawdust from the project. When the epoxy is mixed with just sawdust, it turns out too dark. The colloidal silica lightens it up a bit. It's still monocromatic, but it beats a hole (I guess).
