What is the best way to handle knots in the Western red cedar I’m using? I’m building a garden bench (outdoors, obviously) and a cedar chest (indoors, obviously). The wood I’m using air-dried wonderfully from the cedar tree that dominated the front yard, but most of the knots of any size have cracks. I can cut around them for smaller pieces like back slats on the bench, but for bigger pieces knots are inevitable. What do you recommend?
Thanks,
Jim Bell

I work with knot in some of my projects -now I'm no expert on wood working, but I usually mix 5 minute epoxy with ashes from the fire place mix the epoxy first add the ashes mix to a peanut butter thickness apply with a putty knife when it dry sand it down to 320 grit 400 for a more polished look the ashes turn the epoxy black, I like the look, try it on some scrap wood first to see if you like it.
