Knots traffic doesn’t seem to be picking up
I usually check Knots once a day to see if there are any new postings of interest. I have to say that I’m disappointed most days. This morning I looked on the home page and there had only been a couple of posts, spread across all the different discussions, in the past 24 hours. I have to think that the number of page views must be proportionate to the number of posts. Why would people keep coming back if there is seldom anything new to think about and discuss? I know we lost a lot of posters when the new page design was implemented but I had expected that they would be replaced. It just doesn’t seem to be happening yet.
I will pass on one bit of information about a new accquisition for my shop. I recently purchased an 18″ x 12″ by 3″ granite surface plate from use-Enco.com for $24.95 with FREE shipping within the lower 48. It is advertised as flat to .0002″ and weighs 80 pounds! They also list a 9″ x 12″ for 14.95. Since I live in Canada I had it sent to my BIL’s business in West Virginia and I’ll pick it up this summer when I’m down there for a visit. I suspect I will cut a hole in my secondary workbench and figure out a way to mount it so that it’s flush with the top of the bench. I certainly don’t want to be trying to move around an 80# piece of stone!

Ron

Hi Ron,
If you folks want, I can try to drive more traffic here from our eLetters... Keep me posted if there are good discussions that more people should weigh in on.... send me a link so I don't miss them.

And then again we could all go back to the OLD Knots where you could meet somebody new OR that OLD somebody that just got your Goat by every post but you still loved what he/she said! No longer any fun...
More improvements needed
Gina,
I wrote a long response to your comment yesterday, but when I went to post it the server was down and I lost everything I had written. Too bad, because it was about as good as War and Peace. But I'll try to recreate it here..
One of the reasons I spend less times at Knots these days is that I feel the interface still needs work to make it less irritating to use. It can't come as a surprise to you that several people have requested a decoupling of the left hand Recent Discussion box from the central portion of the forum. The reason? When you read a long thread and want to return to another subject, you need to scroll all the way back up to the top of the page in order to move to a different thread.
And, when you do get there, you'll find your Recent Discussion box has closed. So you have to open it again. Every time! Why can't a Recent Discussion box, say General or Finishing, remain open after it has been opened in the first place? And why can't the entire left hand panel remain fixed in place? Is this complicated to accomplish?
Though these two items might seem like small potatoes, if you spend any time on Knots at all, they interfere with the usability of the site - to the point of irritation, and to the point that I choose to spend less time here. That the forum changeover took place months ago and these issues have not been addressed says something. It's just not as good as it could be and not as good or easy to use as it was before. And, if traffic has fallen off (I have no way of determining if it has or not), that might be some of the reason.
In my business, I try to make things easy for my clients so they will think highly of my services and perhaps hire me again. I wish Knots were easier to use..
Zolton
I agree, it's the grind, grind, grind....
I agree, Zolton. It's just such a chore to read, respond, keep up, etc. Give us back our frames (your point) -- that would help tremendously. And bugs like the one(s) I reported about these text boxes. I type near 90 wpm, but it takes forever sometimes to get a post just right, 'cause I'm fighting the machine here.
re: forum promotion
Gina, I don't think that more promotion of the forum, or specific threads, is the solution. Taunton is already fairly agressive about e-promotion, so adding to that might actually backfire.
Some of the frustration, I suspect, may relate to how quickly software bugs are being fixed, and the level of communication or feedback from the tech staff as things are being worked on.
It used to be that when someone answered your post, you would get an email saying so, or if you answered someone's post they would get an email notice. This doesn't seem to be hapening even when the "notify me" box is checked, so it is very hard to have a conversation going unless you look through each and every post continuously.
Paul

It won't happen if you simply check the Notify Me box Tink. I had the same problem and mentioned it in a thread. I forgot who but they explained to me how to make it happen by going into your controls or something to select the option. Once I followed their instruction which was simple even for me (computer illiterate) it does happen. So... I can't remember how but there are a lot of those computer saavy that can.
While I'm here.. the reason I am here less often is the change gave me time to evaluate how much time I would spend each day scanning 3 forums and still getting 6-8 hours shop time. I have simply decided to just scan in the mornings on those 3 and if nothing truly useful "to me".. move on to the shop. It freed about two hours a day I can use for yard work..etc. I simply look for something I don't already know about in lieu of getting involved in threads I do.
To get the notifications, Paul, you need to enable them in your profile. Click on "My Profile" in the upper left, then click the "Edit" tab, and scroll down to the Comments section. There, you can select from the drop-down menu. Scroll down farther to click the Save button.
There may still be replies, however, that are misdirected by the poster, resulting in the notifications being misdirected, as well.
Well (writing to myself) here is my attempt to get a notification. Thanks to Ralph, Sarge and others, we'll see if it works. This should go a long ways towards making this a workable forum. Others have mentioned the need for a spell check and that is something I also miss. I would like to see it come on as a default. It is a rare that poor spelling is commented on but it just bothers me. On the old system when I finally found out how to do it, I used the spell check all the time.
old knots
Old knots sure would get my vote. I would like to hear what you think.
It is what it is. . .I'm never going to get my old dog, my old golf swing or my old Audi A6 4.2 back and it will be the same with the old Knots. I'm willing to give the "not so new now" Knots a chance to grow and evolve.
Ron
No problem with the new forum
For me, I've been visiting less frequently because I've been trying to spend less time in front of screens. I've been doing lots of woodwork, cleaning house, and other work as well. And the weather is nice, so I've been outisde a lot too. I picked up some apple firewood, 3-5" diameter x 8-12" long and have started turning goblets. My goal is at least one goblet each day the weather is dry. For downtime, I'm spending my time reading (woodworking books, of course!).
Same as Chris
The new forum is OK as I knew it would be , the activity at a glance is certainly not their so you have to do a bit more navigating to see what is happening. I have every confidence that as time passes, the techies will strive to enhance the site.
But, like Chris, I am trying to spend less time at the screen, being more selective in how I use all of the internet resources.
Don
I sure miss "old Knots"
Ron,
I don't spend near as much time here as I used to. The look and feel of he old Knots was good. We are hi-tech where I work and when we put in something new, it better have better stuff (more is optional, unless it adds better features). The new Knots just doesn't seem to have helped anything at all -- at least for us out here.
I don't doubt it may have benefitted FW and Taunton, as it should. But it only got worse for us -- in my opinion. But, my opinion about such as kept me away from here. I realize changes may drive some percentage away (a few forever) but most of them will come back if there is something worth coming back for. I haven't noticed many coming back. Maybe I am wrong. But, the discussions just don't seem to indicate such.
Oh well, I'll check back periodically.

Knots Traffic
I am one of those that's (k)not here much anymore. I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't like the new knots and find it difficult to adjust. It's not that different, but I just can't get into it like I did before. I tell my church all the time we need to move forward and be open to new people and experiences. I guess it's time to practice what I preach.
Tom
My current plan, subject to revision is
for mounting the granite is to mount the plate so that it is about 1/8" above the bench top and open from the front. The only other option that has occurred to me is to put it on a mobile stand because, at 80#, I don't see myself moving this thing unaided. I'm already squeezed for space so a stand isn't my first choice. Any other ideas are appreciated!
I grew up over near Lewisburg, WV. I still miss it!
Regards,
Ron
bench mounting
If the benchtop is thick enough, you might consider mounting it slightly below the surface of the bench, so you could then cover it with a piece of ply, or whatever, to protect the surface.
Damn!
I was just informed by my BIL in WVa that the granite surface plate (mentioned in my original post), although delivered quickly, is broken into several pieces! I've sent a note off to use-enco and I'll see what sort of response I'm given. I noticed that the surface plate is "backordered" on their site so I'm not hopeful of a quick replacement. I have time as I didn't expect to get down to WVa until June or July.
Ron
Ouch! It takes serious effort to break a 2" piece of granite. Unless, of course, it was dropped on a pointed object by someone who didn't bother to read the weight warning on the box.
FWIW, Woodcraft appears to have the same plates, but at a slightly higher price.
Re: Ouch
3" thick! Perhaps someone rolled it down a flight of stairs? Or dropped it off the back of a truck onto concrete? :<)
Ron
Ron, I agree that the volume of discussions here has been slow to get back to the old level. While some of that may be seasonal (e.g. Winter cabin fever vs. Spring get-out-and-do), I suspect the majority is the residual effect of KKS - knotted knicker symdrome - relating to the change in software. In the discussions about the change-over, some folks seemed to expect Taunton to maintain the old software, even though it was not financially feasible to do so, and the original software vendor no longer supported software updates or bug fixes. Some of those folks also generated a lot of traffic, not all of which was directly related to actual woodworking.
Forum traffic is often slow to rebuild after a big change based on new participants, however. It's rather like the growth rate of a nice hardwood tree, I think. It will grow, but it takes time and patience. Trying to rush the growth may also serve only to make the wood softer.
i too am not a fan of the new layout - it just takes way too many clicks to see things - go back - start again - or follow a thread.
all of that keeps me more away than here.
jerry
There seems to be fairly common agreement that the old forum was no longer an option. I'm much happier to have the new forum than no FWW forum at all. The new system has some quirks, but I thought the old one did also. I appreciate greatly everuything Gina and the other staffers have done to create this new forum, including responses to change requests. Again, I'm thrilled to have this new FWW forum as opposed to none.
I hear ya
Unfortunately I guess I as guilty as some of the others. I use to visit multiple times a day. Now I find my self checking in maybe once a day or sometimes every other day. I just looked at my profile and I've been registerd for over 6 years. Its hard to imagine that much time has gone by. I've changed houses twice since then. Times change and the new format did have a few issues and while I still like the old, its understandable to have the need to move on. I think though, a lot of regulars I use to see have drifted away and thats sad there was a wealth of knowledge there. I also think the content cannot be delivered by FWW per se, but must be an ongoing living exchange between the members of the forum. I'm sure a new crew will come along to pick things up given time.
It's the people not the technology.
I'm a relative newcomer here and have not experienced the "old Knots" but I like the forum just fine.
I come here because I enjoy the people here. Intelligent, helpful, courteous, talented people make this my favorite web-site. Hopefully my presence here has not diluted the intelligence average down too low.
I have few complaints but I would like to see some of the conversation run on longer. I've noticed that sometimes I'm the last to comment on a thread so I hope that is just a coincidence and that I'm not killing the conversation.
Bret
"conversations"
I think I saw a photo of you at the Post Office - "Bret, the Conversation Killer". ;-)
For some reason, the old format seemed to promote more chit-chat than the new one does. Some of those "conversations" went on for literally thousands of posts. Frankly, however, it was difficult to sift through them all to get at the posts that were actually on-topic. So, I think there are the usual two sides to the "Conversation Coin". Personally, I kinda like reading posts that are on-point. When I want chit-chat, I just go into the shop and talk to myself. ;-)
Check out a post from 5 years ago
Have you ever checked out posts from 4 or 5 years ago. The people who were posting then ceased posting in a few years. Names are there and converstions with no one I recognize.... So I deduce that people come and go and move on to other activities.
However, I will say the volume of posts is certainly down. I will certainly say that the forum structure has taken its toll. If you remember the Brilliant post by Samson (havenotheardfromhiminages) on making a raised panel with hand tools, this forum was really onto something. Pictures were posted in the dialog with explanation and shared ideas of the how and why. It became a great tutorial and basis for discussion. Lataxe and Reel Time are both posting a similar type of post, and are frustrated that a picture can not be imbedded. Frankly the post loses its ease of following along, especially on difficult steps. There was real POWER in these posts and it was building steam. These posts are what I really enjoyed and what brings me to the forum, well that and Ralphs Puns. Lataxe chastised me for not doing the same with my bedside tables. Frankly it was impossible to do and to frustrating to deal with. I think a lot of the real pros out there have lost interest and why bother to create an eductional post when it will be unreadable.
I am sorry but Fine Woodworking certainly is not Fine Wordproccessing, and until they fix that issue, this forum will never reach its potential. And I speak I am fighting the scroll bar issue.
Morgan (who wants a spulll chcker dsepartly)
Spell Checker
Morgan,
When writing long messages (e-mails, posts, blog entries, etc) I have gotten into the habit of typing them first in a word processor program, then copying and pasting them onto the apropriate web site. That way, if when I hit the post/send button and the page fails to load properly or whatever, I don't have to retype everything again. I've had that happen a few times when writing long e-mails that I take such a long time, my e-mail server signs me out an my message is lost.
I have done that as well, but it is a Work Around..... and how does a new person interested in participating understand this as well?
Ahh back to my nap, big rides this weekend, followed by a hike and damn near stepping on a Rattler. The Rat Bast.... did not make a noise either.
Morgan
morgan,
is it rattlesnake time again-already!?!
gotta watch your step this time of year. the little beauties are all about mating and snoozing in dappled sunlight these spring days. post some pics morgan.
eef
Eef You must have radar...
Now how did you know I almost stepped on one the damn things anyway? I was up for a hike with the Missus by Cave Creek, looking at choice mesquites and other plants pondering their worth as far as lumber, when the Missus Gasps. Now I know she does not do that for no good reason. I look down and I am 3 feet away from the bugger. Laying right across the trail, sleepy as all get out, and not making ANY noise.... grrrr. Well I jump back quicker than a TS kickback and damn near knocked the Missus over. He finally decided to mosey off the trail and go hunt elsewhere. Those damn hikers taste just like Chicken..
Sorry no pics of him (western diamondback, with his purty striped tail), but here is the creek....
Morgan
work around..
Chris,
I used to do this too - do the post in a word processing program and then copy and paste it into Knots. I recently forgot to do it (in fact, it was earlier in this thread!) and lost a great piece - simply brill stuff. Or at least that's what it seemed like in retrospect..
But, again, the point is that there are so many work arounds one must do in order to partake in this forum that it's not as easy or pleasant to hang out here as it once was. That's why I'm frustrated with it. And, to judge by some of the other comments posted here that deal with the same subject, I'm not alone.
I agree that having a Knots forum is better than not having one at all. But it seems like with a few more tweaks this could be a much smoother operation. It is maddening that, in my opinion, the forum's usability has taken a step backward. I thought progress meant going forward; solving problems; making things better. I know it's not always like that. But these issues weren't here before, and now they are. And they are irritating!
Zolton
Loss of easy picture-post takes its toll...
[see title -- says it all]
Lack of Response
What is even more telling is the lack of discussion from Taunton. No response here from them about the needs, and no response to your post either. Hellloooooo is anyone out there listening? As every teacher said to me... Pay Attention!
Morgan
It **is** Sunday.....
Now, Morgan, give 'em a break -- it's Sunday, ya know. There may be an assumption that technical tweaks don't/won't make that much of a difference. A mistaken assumption, IMHO.
Yes I think it is Sunday
Ahh, should have been more precise FG. I meant your original post on the scrolling issue you put up on Tues or Wed. No response there. Gina posted here early on about driving more traffic. Good person, and I believe she values this forum, but then again....who knows.....?
Gina loves us, I'm sure...
Ahhh, I understand now. Yes, the reply mechanism is still incredibly aggravating. I have no doubt Gina greatly values us and the forum, but there are surely several people involved in various priority setting and decision-making efforts.

Disgruntled knotheads
For those that are disgruntled about the change, there is an old version over at Delphi forums. However, it only has about 110 members.

"Opt-out advertising" at Delphi......
I got a personal invite to the old-new forum at Delphi. Part-way into the registration process, it became apparent that there's alot of advertising stuff going on there, and new members could opt-out, but only after completing registration. Not my cup-o'-tea.
Sarge mentioned about no responce to a E-Mail notification. I never (almost) never did that. Not sure if I ever set it to do so???
I like the old Knots MUCH better.. I for one like the responses that were on a thread with a 'off the cuff reply'....
I even loved the not so positive responses (to my thoughts) from forestgirl.. She always stated things much as my loving wife did too/to? my thoughts....
New Forum
Gina, George, Forest Girl, and all
When the new forum was first rolled out I got a bit tired of hearing all the complaints, saying to myself how we are a lot of old foggies and it will take us a bit to make the change to the new forum. But after using it for several months I have to say that the complaints are valid and it is obvious this has driven away a lot of our readers here at Knots and over at Breaktime as well. I, too, get tired of having to back up so many threads just to get to where I can see the other posts. Gina, we know it's not you, but please continue to share our concerns with the "higher ups" that made this decision to change and now refuse to back away from it.
But it is getting better
You do have to admit that it has gotten better since the day they through the switch, so perhaps there will be further enhancements along the way. No spell checking is a pain in the backside, but I haven come across any forums that are any easier to navigate. I haven't gone out of my way to find any either.
The snow is gone, trees an grass are waking up, so it will be a none issue for a few months.

Sapwood, I posted a reply. Basically the Elton John song The itch is back. It either never posted or was purged... Funny lyrics from an irate time in Elton Johns life. Basically poking fun at himself as the itch.
I posted to this thread the other day. Email notifications keep telling me "so-and-so" has posted to the thread you subscribed to.... GOOD LUCK! WHAT POST? WHERE? WHO?? IN WHAT ORDER?? IS IT SOMETHING MARKED "NEW"?? DOES IT EXIST??
This is crazy!
There's a link in the notification e-mail that will take you directly to the subject response. Such responses are marked as "New" (in red) - unless you've already viewed the page.
Ralph,
Red "NEW" is hit and
Ralph,
Red "NEW" is hit and miss with me. For the past several days, there have been no NEW markings.
"Red "NEW" is hit and miss
"Red "NEW" is hit and miss with me. For the past several days, there have been no NEW markings."
In the past when this happened to me it was beaqcuse I was no longer logged in.
I miss the old Knots too.
I've posted some questions, and have recieved few responces. The day of getting
20 different opinions on an issue seem to be over for now. If you have a rant about
the forum you'll get plenty of responces though. I am part of the problem. With fewer new posts
I have been responding to fewer threads.
Like many, change comes hard for me. I'm trying to stay tuned in here, and thank others
who have done the same.
In the spirit of team building, I'll start a new thread today. (I'll think of something)
I hope others do the same.
GRW
Ron,
Waddyamean, no traffic? You posted a msg and got 39 replies. Of course this topic is VERY important - the fact that traffic is way down. The threads that are about woodworking dont seem to be able to attract 10 posts.
Of course there is one thread in Power Tools and Machinery that has 17 replies. It is about "Tablesaw Off and On switch". WHen I saw that topic, I really got excited. Now that is a topic which is central to woodworking.
On Hand Tools there is one thread with 41 replies. It is on Clearance Angles.
I come back once in a while and scan the topics. Haven't seen many interesting ones lately. I also look for excitement (ie lots of replies). Can't find much of that. I also look for messages by some of the allstars -- Ray Pine, Richard Jones, Rob Millard, Larry Williams, OldDusty, ...... I don't see many of those. I used to look for messages by Charles Stanford, Don Green and Samson. They seem to be GONE. I'd love to find any point on which some folks are having a real discussion on a point with multiple points of view, rather than a post with five responses saying "Nice Job".
I get the feeling that Knots has transformed into a woodworking eqivalent of Howard Johnson's Restaurants, just before they closed. I don't believe they ever used any spices, or allowed any interesting food to be served.
What do you think we could do to generate A TINY BIT OF ENTHUSIASTIC DISCUSSION involving people with different points of view? Maybe we could start a new thread which searched for some of this.
How about a thread on the use of Bondo in reparing antique furniture?
Have fun. Keep on truckin. Maybe we can inject some enthusiasm.
Mel
Not gone Mel, but I don't find this new format encourages me to browse through threads, picking up on posts and replying to them, and getting involved in banter. There's a lot of clicking to navigate from one thread to another in one section, and then there's a bunch more clicking to go from one section to another section, and whatever I click on seems to take a long time to load. I just don't have so much spare time to wait for pages to download so I tend to move on after about five minutes or so.
Nowadays there are sections I don't seem to visit for days or weeks at a time, which is different behaviour for me compared to my browsing pattern in the old Knots format. However, I do sometimes pick up on a thread and post, here for example, but of course this message has nothing useful to say about woodworking, ha, ha. Slainte.
concurance
Richard, glad to see your message. I resolved early on that I wouldn't be one of the complainers as I just don't like doing that. But over time I've had the same impressions as you, and the same observations, and I hate to see the quality of the input decline. I consider Knots a valuable resource and would like to see it stay that way.
My email tells me that there are several new posts in this thread. I'll be damned if I'm going to sift through two pages of posts looking at names and dates to see what is new.
Richard,
The best work-around I've come up with to avoid a lot of paging around is to open the "recent topics" page (upper left box on the site), then right-click on any that look interesting. It still takes a while for that page to open, but closing it takes me immediately back to the recent topics page, where I can see what discussion- gen'l discussion, the cafe, hand tools, they are part of, and pick and choose accordingly.
Mostly I lurk, as it seems that most of the characters who rattled my chain are gone. Cept you, Mel, and Lataxe, of course. haha
Ray
I hadn't tried that trick Ray. I had a wee go at it and it looks like it might be a useful one. Thanks for the tip. Slainte.
No woodworking but it's a start!
I've got to admit that I'm surprised that my little observation has generated 50+ responses. Apparently it's still a subject that is inflammatory so I'll try to restrain myself in the future. I remember that old line I heard so often as a kid - "If you keep picking at that it will never heal!"
If the original post is of any relevance at this point you might remember that I DID mention my recent order for a surface plate which is tangentially related to woodworking! I also mentioned later that it had been delivered by UPS in a less than perfect state. Use-enco has agreed to send me another one (no charge for shipping - again) and we've discussed the possibility that perhaps UPS won't roll or drag it all the way to WVa. I live in hope...
One good thing I've noticed in this longer-than-expected thread: No one has mentioned the possibility that if we all had bought that green European brand instead of that green Asian brand we would be living happily ever after. No one has mentioned Obama, health care, Afghanistan, the banking industry or the Tea Party. No one has trotted out a diversional segue relating to "Made in America". Back in the days before we were transported to the new and improved Knots at least one of those issues would probably have been inserted by Charles (or one of his clones) or one of the more obsessive participants. I'm starting to think that at least the current crop of posters have more focus!
Regards,
Ron
Oh now you opened Pandoras Box...
Ron,
I am quite certain your momma told you not poke sticks into beehives, so what in the wide wide world of sports are you thinking? Posting topics like how the Tea Party is founded on the idea of having your cake and eating it too? OH my this post could go on for weeks!
AZMO.
Nuke the gay whales for Jesus..... while we are it.
I've found this thread to be beneficial as well as interesting! I now know to use the "new" notifications, and how to instigate the email notifications. I also think that, overall, the new "crew" seemto be less inclined to start the mud-slinging and personal attacks that used to characterize many of our discussions. From my point of view that's a positive change! Now...if we could just get the spelling, photo attachments, etc. working easily we could be off to the races!
Regards,
Ron
Hello Ron!
I am finding it frustrating. You cannot turn off the email notifications, and since no new posts are marked in red as NEW, the entire thread is a mismatch. I am going to try removing my email address from the profile, and see if that stops the notifications.
I haven't tried to turn Notifications off so I can't comment. I can see the New labels. It's wierd that you aren't seeing them! Are you saving your changes in your profile? I only ask because that box is much further down the page and I missed it the first couple of times I tried to change my profile.
Regards,
Ron
My Red New has not worked for two days also... e-mail is telling me there is new but you would have to sift through as you state to find them. Dis-appointing but in lieu of getting my shorts in a wad I simply am not going to sift through.. turning off th auto notification and going down to the shop to build a twin bed. Well.. after I get through Dancing With the Starsa and Idol which I don't have a problem figuring out what is happening. haha...
As I've pointed out to no-one several times before, on posts (like this one) that are more than 1 page long, if you open the 1st page, the site assumes that you have seen the whole thread. So, when you scan page one, then click to go to page 2, the new posts there aren't new (red-flagged) to you anymore. It treats paging down as a re-opening of the page.
If on the other hand, you click on the "7 new posts" in the thread description, it tkes you directly to the 1st "new" post, which, if you are lucky, is on the 2d page, so then you can see the other new posts as red-flagged as well.
PITA, but that's how it seems to "work"...
Ray
Ray,
I guess I'm not holding the mouse correctly....
I got expert help on mouse control...
Awww..........
Thanks Ray.. that saves time I don't have to throw away!
Regards for a great day and a great southern garden yeild this year... :>)
So, all kidding aside, HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF THIS THING? I have changed all settings in Profile and the Notification box. I'm still getting emails.... Can you turn it off, or are you stuck with Knots forever???
Looks like you don't if you went in and checked the Notify Me box in settings. I'm still getting them also. But.. I did find out even though you have set to get notifications in the settings portion.. any new thread you comment on you can go to the bottom of your post before you submit and Un-Check the box that states Notify Me When New Comments Are Posted. As far as getting out of one I did not originally UN-Check the box.. welll........ ???
With my computer knowledge... getting rid of your current computer and getting a new one appears to be the solution! :>)
I guess my question should have been "Can you op-out of notifications on a thread?"

You're welcome Sarge,
The early garden is all in, peas, lettuce, radishes, spinach, and beets are up, and onions, broccoli and cabbage plants set out. Saw a couple taters just paaping thru last evening, the shower of rain we had last nite and this am ort to help bring 'em on. Gonna try an early row of beans this week if things aren't too wet to plant. At least the peas came up this year, total failure last year, not even enough for a mess.
Local farmers ought to be planting their field corn this week, the oak leaves are as big as a mouse's ear...
Always start out with a bang in the spring, and end with a whimper about july when the weeds take over- look out one morning, and they've grown two feet overnite.
Best wishes,
Ray
Skillet fryed Silver Queen is what I thought of when you mentioned corn. Spring has already sprung here and the leaves are just about full size. The pollen has sub-sided so I went out around the perimeter of the house and bushwacked around the trees with my brush cutter. The sweet gum balls are all up and discarded now so all I have to do it mow which I have already done twice already. I ripped some QSWO today for some quad-linear legs on a Mission Twin bed and will get into that project tomorrow.
As with you.. plants in the ground so carry on.... :>)
Regards...
Hey, it worked, it worked.................. And the email storage issue is no problem. I can just stack them out back until winter when I can use them to heat the wood shop.
Haha..... love out of the box thinking!
it doesn't matter to me, whether it's "old vs New" forum, it's irrelevant. navigation still has to be done, typing responses is the same, even the topics aren't too different from the past. however, I've found that most forums have swings in participation. the few I visit are seeing the same thing... less posting, lost members, etc..but I think there's several reasons for it. first off, it's better weather..time to get outside and do some work. 2ndly, toipics can get over-done in a hurry. and the more you read repeatitive topics, the less apt you are to respond. what I've found is that forums are the same, mostly ran in the same fashion, and after awhile, you see similar posts on several forums. it used to be that I wnated to learn from the more knowledgeable wooworkers, but as my interest has slightly wained for the summer, I don't have an interest in reading anything about woodworking. same applies to magazines.. used to get 4 different ones, now I do 2 and one of them ends this month so I'll be dowm to one..and when that perscription ends, it'l;l be gone too. all this to say that people change, interests change, and that there's and vast quantity of forums out there... personally, I'm about forumed out....lots of good people on forums, too bad they all live 1000 miles away............
