Hi all,
I am currently making some marking and cutting gauges for Christmas presents for fellow woodies. Making them out of Australian Rosewood and Red River Gum. 6mm brass inserts have not been problem to source, however knurled brass thumb screws are. These are for the locking adjustment on the fence. Has anyone got any ideas where these can be sourced from??
Many thanks,
Wonga

Hi Wonga
That is a nice project. Well done.
I think that you can get them from Lee Valley, or something similar. Before I began making them for myself I used one of theirs on a cutting gauge I built:

That is from Lee Valley.
It is quite a simple matter to make your own. Such as this one from a Spier restoration ...

You can find my tutorial here below (all parts available from the garden section at Bunnings):

Derek,
Thanks for the help, it looks easy. The Brass inserts I purchased were from the US (E bay) and were about 1/4 of the price delivered than what I can buy in Sydney. You appear to have a well set-up workshop and passionate about tools. I collect and restore tools but mainly as "users" not "display items". The gauges are for my fellow "woodies" as an original for there use.
I have a set of Stanley SW planes except for a No 1. This is work in progress.
Thanks for your help,

http://www.mcmaster.com is one such source
Rick,
Thanks for the information - just perfect.

I've purchased these for my company through McMaster-Carr and MSC. what size are you looking for and can you give a better description (stud or threaded wing nut or what?)? I have a few laying around.
Thanks Tony,
The size is M6 X 25MM. I plan to make seven gauges. I live in Australia and sourced the brass inserts from the US. Any help is always appreciated.
Wonga.
I'll take a peak to see what I got, but it's doubtful that I'd have any metric, but you never know!
OK here I go again off the deep end..
I needed some, in fact this year, and I could not find any.
I looked at the local hardware stores and at the 'big boxes' and found some very cheap tools in a bin. I bought the junk 'carpenters squares' that had brass knobs..
Bit more cost but if I figured in shipping I guess I came out even...
Worked for me..
Thanks Will,
Good tip.

Wonga
I think Reid's might have them as well.

Just a photo or 2 of a simple but very useful marking gage made by Steve Latta. I took a photo of his gage at a FWW/Colonial Williamsburg conference a few years back. I have made a couple gages just like this one from scraps left from projects. This is a nice gage using a Rockler adjustment screw and an exacto blade. Its bigger than some of the other gages I have used but it feels very comfortable to me. Maybe it will suit you??

Thanks Dan,
Lovely stuff! and yes I can see this design being incorporated into my projects. It is interesting the small amount of materials required to produce such fine items.
Many thanks Dan,
Wonga.
