All,
I want to remove the manuf. label from a piece of wood without having to sand it off. Is there a good/better/best method of doing this?
Thanks in advance,

Well, one method is to not buy your wood from Home Depot. ;-)
Naptha should do it.

But I thought that the stickers at HD would come off easier than those at Lowes! The undisciplined life is not worth examining.
See the post on "Sticker Goo", there are lots of suggestions.

You can go the the drugstore and get a bottle of nail polish remover that contains acetone. Might have to look for it since they are trying to get away from it, but it will remove most labels or stickers from anything.

Doesn't most polish remover have oil in it? (You can tell I don't "do" my nails, LOL). A hair dryer will work, and of course most solvents.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-) Do unto others as you tell them they should do unto you....
Sometimes you can shave the labels off with a single edge razor blade. Then rub the adhisive off with a cloth. A big pain

I think that this thread has reached it's limit of useful information.

I have a BIG BOX one that works OK!
Finally, an advanced woodworking topic on Knots!
a couple years ago I bought a bottle of something labeled as a label remover. It's just a mix of solvents but it has a nice brush on pad and a blade-like plastic top for scraping. convenient and works well. Not sure where you'd find it though. Think I got it in the check out lane at a big box store, perhaps a good drug store.
A minute or two of hot air directed at the label (think hairdryer) will melt the adhesive and the label can then be peeled right off.
And its not just the big box stores that are now sticker labeling their stock... My local Specialty Hardwoods has also resorted to bar coded labels. I guess one too many lacewood billets made it out of the store after someone asked the checkout guy "How much is this weird looking board I found in the soft maple bin?"
Give the hair dryer trick a try... I avoid applying solvents or anything else that might interfere with a finish down the road.
Hope this helps!

Try "GooGone" from HD or Target. It's like an orange oil and takes the labels off without causing a finishing problem. It works very well.
I had used a sharp block plane set fine -- the downside is that you have to clean the gunk off the plane afterwards!
Ooops...label removal? I thought this was another complaint thread from ummm...
nevermind
hair dryer first then a little mineral spirits. you may already have these items around the house. works for me. good luck , Splinters
denatured alcohol works for me......
