About 5 years ago, we sprayed a set of cabinets with precatylized lacquer. Now there are spots, especially on the top edges of the doors, where the lacq. is flaking off. I say “flaking off”………the wood feels raw……and looks white, especially the end grains. The base cabinets are worse than the tops, but the spots are scattered all around.
I can’t remember any strange circumstances during spraying, since it was 5 years ago, but I would appreciate any ideas you folks may have.
Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,
Any chance you used magnalac? Just curious - seems to do the same thing in the same time frame. Sprayed finishes are usually thinner at corners/edges, especially sharp corners/edges, and will often fail there. Sounds like moisture has begun to migrate under the finish - time to re-finish. If you did use magnalac, switch to the new magnamax or one of the post-cats or CV.

Thanks, Paul. Several folks have told me the same thing about moisture getting under the finish. Looks like I do have some refinishing ahead of me. I'm not looking forward to that.
I wonder if I could sand the problem spots, and then put poly over everything? Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks again,

Jerry,
I concur with the moisture prognosis & in my experience poly over pre cat won't work, you really need to get the pre cat off before applying poly. I don't know if a rub back & applying post cat would solve your problem - maybe someone else can help there.
