On table tops & large flat areas, Dupont polishing compd (availble at auto supply stores) applied with a lambs wool bonnet is one of the fastest ways to get a high gloss finish. Sand with a super fine wet and dry paper (400 to 600) and carefully polish with a damp buffer and the compound. On small projects, spraying with a good quality high gloss lacquer, with careful sanding with fine grit paper between coats, should give a satisfactory finish with out much rubbing.
