Hey guys, this ever happen to you?
I’m finishing some small items using Deft lacquer from an aerosol can. I first seal the item with Deft Lacquer sealer. That goes on nice and smooth. Then I steel wool it down and spray Deft lacquer. Even after many coats, with 0000 steel wool in between, the lacquer wants to ‘dapple’, for lack of a better word. It won’t lay down and make a smooth finish. After drying, it looks better, but I can still see the dappling. It’s not making the mirror finish I want. I have also tried 400 grit w/d paper between coats with the same problem. Temp has been in the 70’s, and relatively low humidity.
Any ideas? Should I get a different brand? I even dampened the surface with paint thinner and that did no good.
Getting another brand in a spray can may be difficult. I have never had this problem using Deft lacquer in my spray gun. But, here, using a spray gun would not be practical.

Sounds like "orange peel." Does it look like the skin of an orange?
If so, that is a symptom of it drying too fast. Being a spray can, there is not much you can do about it.
That said, lacquer is generally "finished" after it dries if you want a smooth gloss. Put on enough coats--you don't have to sand between coats unless the surface is really bad as lacquer melts the preceding coats and creates one solid finish. Now sand the surface with 600 W&D sandpaper, followed by 1200 W&D lubricated with either water or mineral spirits. Finally, apply polishing compound and then paste wax.
*Do your between-coat sanding with a hard sanding block to knock down high spots.
