First, ain’t this a snazzy new addition…
Anyway, does anyone know of a ladder stand-off that would span more the 4′ and would this be “safe” if such a thing existed?

CAG,
Knot's regular here.
Snazzy is a good word for it. Cool. I just had to post.
I can't answer your question, but I'll add that I have never used my extension ladder without the 4' wide 1' deep standoff since I bought it about 4 years ago. That thing makes me feel so much more secure up in the air. Don't have to lean back from the work. I did buy the better protective ends for it, trashed the stock cheap ones.
I have also used it on the step ladder for working on windows. Spans my windows nicely.
Why are you asking, may I ask? I would think if a wider one exists it would be perfectly safe if built right.
I think I'm the 13 poster here, is that bad?
Enjoy, Roy
Roy,
probably not a bad thing, but if we don't here back from you....
I needed a wider one because the windows I was stuck painting today were just over 48" wide from outside trim to outside trim.
which meant the stand off we have at work was approximatly an inch short of working. The site conditions in general were a PITA, couldn't set up ladder jacks, scaffolding was out, pump jacks may have worked but would have been a bigger hassle the jockeying the ladder around. Also couldn't extend the ladder above the tops of windows because the trim ran basically to the roof line. There was no good option, just a PITA job.
so, I ended up painting as much as I could, letting the paint dry and then went back and moved the ladder onto the freshly dried paint to access the rest of the window.
I can't think of any reason why a wider one would be un-safe, but the widest I've seen are about 4'The Count-Down begins, 81 days left
Count down?, Did I miss something?
How about two extensions, each off center to the sides. Those mounting U brackets are built to last a lifetime.
But, be carefull, always.
Enjoy, Roy
what do you mean by two extensions? a ladder on each side of the window?
The count down is, counting down too my last day of college.
It's started at what I thought was a 100 days, but it's been off because I had the day wrong, and now it's off because I did the math wrong, but tomorrow it will be accurate so I'm leaving it alone until Sat, then I start changing it again...

I don't know if you're interested in this idea or not. Seems to me that you could attach a 6 foot long board to the ends of the existing extension. Then you could add a couple of rubber feet to that board, so that the rubber feet would be the only parts that touch the house.
Agreeably, this would leave you with the problem of how to paint what's behind the board. But it would allow you to place yourself in the middle of those windows.
(BTW, I agree with the snassiness hereof).
Vast projects should not be founded on half vast ideas.
actually, I realized today I was an idiot about the whole thing. The windows start at the corner and work themselves back into the house, the easy thing to would have been to to put the ladder where I could work from the outside back in, and keep moving the ladder to the next unpainted section....
Hard to explain with out a picture, but lets just say I stood at the back of the house looking up today, and said DOH! and had to go say "stupidstupidstupid" as I banged head against the wall.
I was to fixated with what a PITA it was going to be, to see the real simple solution. The Count-Down begins, 81 days left
Don't be so hard on yourself, after all your still in school!! In just 81 days you'll know every thing there is to life, Including ladder set-ups.
Good luck in the rest of your studies.

Two Thumbs Up on getting to zero.
My thinking was the extensions each starting in the middle and going out each side. Extensions clamped end to end. Doesn't sound as good today.
Enjoy, Roy
I ran into the same problem two years ago. I took a 6'-0" 2x3 and drilled 3/8" hole where the Ubolts go. Then added a 12" 2x3 return on each side. I put triangular 1/4" plywood gussets over and under each return so they wouldn't collapse. The regular mittens for ladders fit over the 2x3's.
