laminating solid wood. Grain direction?
Hey everyone. I am making chairs right now and I am new to it. Often, I don’t find thick enough material in my area for the seat. The result is taking 4/4 material and gluing them face to face for a 2″ thick glue up. Obviously with edge joints, we look at end grand and make the “smiles” be “rainbows” for every other stave.
If the glue joint is the large face of the two pieces, should I look to match the end grain, top piece “smile” and bottom piece a “smile” so that if movement occurs it will be in the same direction? Or do I alternate to reduce movement at all?

The smiles and rainbow thing is a myth. It won't help, or hurt, cupping. Arrange your boards so they look the best. If significant end grain will show on your finished piece, take that into account.
