Hi folks. I’m going to be building a workbench soon, and my plan is to use a solid-core door for the top. I ordered a door from the same folks who made me a nice mahogony entryway on my new home. They delivered the door as promised while I was at work, but when I got home I discovered that the door is covered in primer. My fault, I didn’t specify that I wanted the door bare.
I really don’t want a primed or painted work surface, nor do I want to attempt to sand it all off. My solution is to cover the top with a layer of plywood and then apply hardwood edging. That will give me a very solid 2-1/2″ top.
My question is if glue (Titebond III) will hold to a primed surface? I will probably drive some screws from underneath as well, but would like the additional strength of the glue.

There are two interfaces to be concerned with: the ply-to-paint bond, and the paint-to-door bond. Neither of them is as strong as a ply-to-door bond -- if you remove the paint. Me, I'd take the trouble to sand it.
