I am making a large run (at least to me) of about 30-40 plywood boxes. They are roughtly one foot square on the end by four feet long.
To save time and show off the the oak plywood and oak fitting inside, I would like to paint the outside but leave the inside unfinished. What is the likelyhood that they will warp if I don’t paint both sides?
I realize I could clear coat them but then I am back to doing all that work and I would just paint them.
So, what is the verdict?

By definition, plywood is way more stable than solid wood, so I see no warping probs in painting the outside and leaving the insides unfinished.
Visually, the warp would be undetectable.
Michael ,
I agree with the other posts , unless the boxes get subjected to extreme moisture , or other problematic situations I think they will be just fine. You didn't say how they will be used but if you could put tabs or glides or whatever to keep them from wicking up moisture from the floor or ground this may safeguard against warpage.

Michael,
For an interior application, you probably won't have a problem, but applying a quick coat of shellac to the interior surfaces, possibly before you assemble the box wouldn't hurt and it will, in addition, make the interior look better, stay cleaner, and prevent the fine splinters that plywood veneer has from snagging fabrics that are placed in the box, though that may not be a problem depending on the application. In any case, don't use an oil based finish on the interior, it will smell for years.
While warpage from uneven finishing might not be a problem, unless the boxes have some sort of frame around the open side of the box, it is unlikely that the sides will stay perfectly straight since even good grades of plywood are rarely absolutely flat. A half inch bow or more over an unsupported four foot edge is fairly likely and it could be worse.

This is the box I am making. It will be too heavy to be moved but I am sure some guys will just HAVE to drag it to the range so people can Ooh and Aahh over their toys.
That is why I am making the outsides smooth with no projections. This isn't my case but I am using the basic design. However, I think you can see why I want to get away from painting the inside!

Ray,
Semi auto beltfed guns like these don't meet the legal qualifications of assualt weapons, even in California so there were no restrictions.
Just goes to show what a pointless law it was.
Michael,
Yeah, I was just being a smart a$$. But if it had a bayonet lug....or a 15 rd mag...
Just out of curiosity, is a FFL required to work on restricted weapons, if you are not the owner? I just finished "Unintended Consequences", and it has raised a lot of questions.

Ray
