I am planning to build (2) swing doors for my garage. The opening is 8′ x 7′. What size stock should I use. I am finding it difficult to locate 7/4. I am concerned about the weight of the door an looking for a good solid design, would prefer it to have three 12″x”12″ windows across the top. Do I need a center stile? Also I would like to use the old fashing strap (bard door) hinges, how many and what length.
Any suggestion would be welcomed…..Kestral

I built a couple 4' x 9' garage swing doors from mahogany, due to it's stability. Phillipine "mahogany" because it's lighter and cheaper. I used 2" finished stiles and rails - two 1" boards glued together. The stiles and upper and lower rails were 7", with a 6" mid rail to seperate the upper windows from the lower paneled sections. I also used 4 ball bearing hinges per side and they swung quite smoothly.
Thanks for the quick reply. Another friend also recommended Phil. Mahog. so I will be checking that out. I was also planning four hinges, so it looks like I am on the right track.
