Hello,
I’m making Chris Gochnour’s sideboard that was on a recent cover of FWW. In it, he calls for a large cove bit to be used to cut the recesses for the draw pulls:
“Cove, 11⁄2 in. dia. by 3⁄8 in. deep, cut with 1 3⁄4-in. radius cove bit“
I’m having problems sourcing a bit that large. The largest I found was 1 1/4-in radius. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them. I’ve been searching online for a while and can’t seem to uncover exactly the bit I need.
Thanks,
Charlie

I'm going to go with the idea that he happened to have that bit handy. I wouldn't be married to the dimensions enough to prevent me from using a 1-1/2" or a 2" if that would give me the look I was after.
Looking at the pictures I do not believe that is a 3-1/2" diameter bit. The 1-3/4" number is probably a typo for the DIAMETER, not RADIUS.
I don't think a 3-1/2 inch cove router bit exists. The biggest raised panel bits are t hf-49 at size, but they are pretty flat. I'd guess it was a diameter/radius typo too. But that's just a guess.
If you do the calculations, I did, it will require a bit between 1,75 and 2 inches diameter that enters the wood 3/8'' to give a 1 1/2 inch diameter circle at the face of the drawer. I would do it on the lathe.
Thanks for doing the calculations. Based on that, it seems likely it's a radius vs diameter typo as GeeDubBee mentioned.
