I would like to purchase a large 3 1/4 hp vs router for under table work. the Porter solid base 7518 seams to be the only choice.
Two friends of mine have 7518 routers but they both had problem with the aluminum housing gauling, making it hard to make up & down adjustments.
Would a plunge router be a better choise?
There are a up and down adjustable router lifts that are costly, to fit the 7518 router/JessEm Mast-R-Lift. this may be the only way to go.
I talked to Porter Cable and explained the gauling problem and they said to use bees wax on the housing. I think saw dust would stick to the wax.
Thank You

My 7518 hasn't seen the underside of a router table-yet. I've heard of the problem and the solution seems to be blowing it off occasionally and a good dust collection setup to help keep the dust from getting there in the first place. We shall see. I've used a 690 (which has the same type of depth adjustment) in a router table without problem. One other real alternative is Milwaulkee's 5625-20 fixed base 3 1/2 hp router. It's variable speed, has electronic feedback control and the best part is you can adjust the depth from above the table like Milwaukee's smaller Body Grip router. About $330 online. For me it mostly came down to $ and cents. The 7518 is well proven and with all the promos at the time I bought it, it was more than $100 less than the Milwaukee. One other alternative is the Hitachi M12V 3 1/4 hp plunge router. It's best feature may be the price- about $160 online.

Thank you for the information. This seems to be the very router that fits all my needs. I am replacing a 2hp Craftsman with table that I was never pleased with. Christmas is early this year, my dear wife said buy yourself the router you want for Christmas. I already placed an order with Tool Crib in ND.
Thank You again

I purchased an Milwaukee 5625-20 with height adjustment from top or bottom . My next choice would have been the Porter Cable 7518 with an after market lift system. Thank for your reply.

Have a 7518 under the table on the PM66. for ten years or so..
Had the galling problem, that was solved about 6 years ago with the lubricant .. still is the best, and I didnt have to spend the price of the router for a lift divice...
I have a Triton under my table. It is rated at 3 1/2 HP. Blade height adjustment is easy as there is a quick adjust and a micro adjust knob. You can easily change bits above the table because it locks when you raise the carraige all the way up.
greetings redbob, i purchased a bosch 1619 evs plunge router this year and mounted it under the table without any difficulties. you don't need ANY extra accesories to accomplish this task and the instructions are right on the router itself!
good luck!
