Maybe this should be in tools.
I’m interested in any experience using lasers to cut pieces for marquetry or for inlaying – shell for example – into solid wood.
What equipment is available? Are there firms who contract this work? What are the technical capabilities and costs?

Malcolm,
The lasering process works, but the wood gets burnt in the process. A while back there was a Fine Woodworking issue that showed a builder who contracted a CNC style laser to cut repetitive patterns for custom seat back on a series of chairs. The process worked well, but the piece looked lightly charred everywhere the laser cut. This wasn't a problem for the builder, as each piece was sanded well and then ebonized.

Thanks Dan
I'm thinking about veneer thicknesses - overlaying two varieties and then mixing and matching to get prefect inlays (simplified marquetry).

Go here for a laser forum. There's other out there as well. A google search will find them. There's some on yahoo as well. You might want to ignore the laser hair removal forums though.
