Forgive me in advance as I am unfamiliar with hardware terminology.  I am making a 12″x 10″ box with a hinged lid.  I like the idea of having a latch and key centered in the front.  I am having trouble finding a latch that is mortised into the front of the box, flush with the surface.  I would also consider a latch that is surface mounted to the box.  Horton and Brusso do not have anything like that?  Any ideas?  Something like the below is close, but would look strange because it is meant to be mounted horizontally and the keyhole would be sideways on the box:
