All,
I started to build a two draw lateral file this weekend for the CFO….says she need one draw for my tool receipts.
Anyhow, I don’t have any plans and am building them inside out. Built the two draws that measure 27x16x12 to accomodate legal size folders. The overall case size will be about 30x30x20 because that is a popular size in store bought stuff. I’m a little concerned that the draws will be tippy..especially if the bottom draw is empty, the top draw full and the top draw is extended. I’ll have a good 3plus inches behind the bottom draw and am wondering if I should add some weight back there. Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

I assume you're using drawer hardware, as opposed to simply wood runners or other non-mechanical system. Look into an "interlock" system. It'll allow only one drawer to open at a time. I think Rockler has them. That'll solve the problem of having it tip with both drawers open. Otherwise, I'd build it and see if the added weight is needed. But, I'm just a hack visiting from Breaktime.
If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
Mr. Pita,
Yes, I bought the good 100 lb draw slides. I was not aware of the interlocking Rockler solution..I'll take a look. thanks
