I’m looking at 1.5 hp dust collectors, and would appreciate comments on how the latest machines compare to earlier models. In particular, Jet has a canister model, #1100 which looks pricey, and Delta now has two 1.5 hp models 50-760 and 50-850A. Are the canisters better? Any comments about noise levels?

I have the Jet Cannister model. It is not too noisey. All of the tools I use it with are louder than the dust collector. I like the plastic bags that collect the dust and the cannister does a great job of keeping dust from passing back into the shop.
I don't necessarily have a new model. I have 1.5 penn state with 1 micron bags. Works great for my 2 car garage shop. Easy on off of bags. Hit the top one every once in a while to knock the dust off.
Hemmig, I own the Delta 1.5hp and added the canister when it became available. The difference is incredible. The only problem I ran into was burning a router motor while the DC was on and it absorbed the smell into the pleats! It's been a month since and the smell's still there when I turn it on!
