I got a Walker-Turner for $200. I do not do bowls, only spindles.
Check Craigslist if you're not in a big hurry. I found a Sawstop PCS that way. Best to set up an alert so that CL will notify you when a new add comes up.
Also Facebook Marketplace - I saw 5 lathes, 5 jointers and a few band saws this AM
What do you want to turn? There's a big difference in bowl and faceplate lathes, and spindles for furniture.
Something that is compatible with accessories you might already have. Accessories cost can easily surpass the cost of the lathe. I need a steady rest,, I need a drill chuck...it adds up.Since a newer lathe under a grand is going to be pretty light weight compared to your 1950s craftsman you must be looking for variable speed, digital read out that sort of thing. Thats going to be hard to find. Things come up on Craigslist but you have to follow closely, keep cash on hand and the truck warmed up. Your looking for a deal and when things are actually a deal they go fast. When they're not they will be on there for weeks.. If your looking for a high quality vintage classic then you watch and wait. I have an old Delta that services me just fine and I see similar models pop up on Craigslist for well below your price point ,sometimes older powermatics. I like Rockwell/Delta, Powermatic in old stuff because there were so many of them and you'll have a good chance of finding parts. With that said, I've been hunting a deal on a Union Harrison Graduate for a long time. On the very rare occasion I stumble on one it's really expensive and 2000 miles away. What would you have if you invested your $1000 in the lathe you have?
