anybody have good lathe dust collection methods? im aware of some people who hold a shop vac hose right up in the hollow of the roughing gouge, and i guess you could put a hose nearby when sanding, but any other ideas?

I have a lathe. I have a decent cyclone dust collector. I have a shop vacuum. My goal was to work at the lathe without wearing a respirator. To date I have been unsuccessful. When roughing-out bowl or cylinder blanks chips go every direction as does the smaller debris.
I do not collect the chips, there are too many and go in every direction. For sanding I hook up the 4 inch dust collector to a funnel and as long as the sanding is within about a feet from the intake, it collects it all.
It's a nightmare.
The problem is that chips come off above the tool so collecting them is impossible as a collector would have to be in the line of sight of the turner.
Fine dust from sanding though can be collected using a funnel arrangement behind the workpiece and an HVLP suction device.
This is best on a moveable arm in line with the centre of the lathe.
I have had some success drawing air through the ways, but worry about small parts falling in...
I use a '3 fan' setup that works in my shop. Behind me on a bench is the first fan that blows air across me and towards the lathe. On the far side of the lathe are the other two 20" box fans that have filters on them. As I work, the dust gets blown away from me and into the two filters. The filters dirty up pretty quick so I know this setup works.
I stopped trying to figure it out, and got a Sundstrom respirator. My breathing is much better.
