Lathe: Oneway or Laguna’s Pinnacle?
I’ve recieved a lot of insight and help with questions I’ve asked since I came to this website and forum.
Now, I’ve got a question that’s a Real Biggie…. Lots of money, heavy machines, and a lifetime of living with one of them….
“Overlooking” cost, which lathe is the best buy for big work as well as 8″-10″ sizes? Oneway’s 2436 or Laguna’s Pinnacle?

Your experience and insight will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't a clue! But if you held a gun to my head and made me choose based on the website info, I would pick the Laguna. It looks so much more solid and business-like than the other.
Couldn't see the price differential, but I would guess the second model is much cheaper.
Good luck with your purchase.
I do hope others with some turning experience will chime in.

Hastings
PS I do believe looks do convey an important gestalt about the product. People always said the Spitfire just looked the part, as well as being a brilliant aircraft.
Ever since I started looking into Laguna's rep for customer service, I deleted them from my 'approved vendor's list'.
I am trying to decide between the Oneway and a General.
Something you should be wary of, though: imported (from your perspective) machinery is set to rise dramatically in price as the US dollar continues its journey into the toilet.
For what it is worth, Oneway told me they expect to raise their US prices soon (I am a Canuck, so my choice is to drive to their factory and buy, or go to NY and import).
(I add how many horsepower - 2 or 3?)

Be sure to also look at Vicmarc lathes. The VL300 is an especially outstanding lathe. Vicmarc & Oneway lathes are designed and manufactured by people who truly understand woodturning.....not as just another product. You can't go wrong with either.
Rick
How much is the Oneway?
Thanks, Edward
The basic 2436 OneWay unchanging price is $5,525...plus $540 shipping.
The Pinnacle is $8,095....plus $625 shipping to Texas

Thanks, Edward
Bill,
I have a Oneway 1640 and just recently sold a Laguna Pinnacle with duplicator and spiraling attachments. I will say that both are fine lathes but the Oneway is more refined. Finding accessories to fit the Pinnacle will be challenging and often have to be custom made. I never really cared much for the dovetailed ways on the Pinnacle but given its duplicating and spiraling functions, it was probably the most logical design choice. The Pinnacle is geared more to be a production type lathe where duplication of parts is its forte. My turning needs changed from duplication more toward enjoyment and I found that I nearly always preferred the Oneway over the Pinnacle for this purpose. Depending on your intended use should be the determining factor on which lathe is best for you.

The Oneway 2436 is the gold standard by which other lathes are measured. Oneway's parts and accessoreis are readily available. One of the local stores I frequent has one on the sales floor; it's built like a tank.
I didn't know that lathes were one of the tools Laguna imported; is is new to their line?
Barry,
Somewhere, I think I read that the Pinnacle has been out for the past 2 or 3 years... You might click on that website link above and see if the history is there.
I do worry about parts and company support when considering Laguna. Like a dozer that's turned into just a hunk of steel due to a high pressure oil leak, NOT getting parts or service could turn this huge lathe into a pricey hunk of junk...
