Think used. Not much to go wrong, and its easy to determine on inspection. In particular you may well get tools and accessories that you would otherwise have to spend a small fortune on if you start from scratch.
I love my Delta midi. With the extension you can swing 31". ($270 for the lather $50 for the extension)
Now that said, if I had it to do again, I might go with one of the freestanding Grizzleys. Slightly longer bed and the head turns in case you want to do larger bowls.
I don't have a lot of floor space in my "shop" (the Mrs keeps confusing it with the laundry area/basement) -- so the Midi is great but if...

Grizzly G0462 from UPS freight in about an hour or so:) Probably not the best but it should help make me enough to afford something better in the future.

I was being funny partly but in all honesty, I believe this. Other than Norm... I think we all pay for our own tools.
I've never known of somebody, other than Norm, who had every damn tool ever made to do something. If there were left and right handed screwdrivers, he'd have the lefties in Red and the righties in Green.

If I had to do it today I'd opt for the Grizzly G5084 For $375 you cannot beat it..
My experiance with Grizzly has been so great that I cannot recommend them too highly..
