I inherited a Sprunger Lathe from my father and when I was looking it over I noticed the belt was ready to break. I thought I could replace the belt and be on my way but I am unable to get the spindle out to slip the new belt over the shaft and pulley. I removed the “stop” on one end of the spindle but the spindle won’t move, even with the persuasion of a wooden mallet. I can not see any plate, or split in the head casting that should be removed to allow the spindle to be removed. Any suggestions on what I might do to install a new belt, short of buying a new Lathe?
The only printed information I have found was in some printed material I got from my dad and it is for a Shopmaster Lathe but the head pictured is not the same head as the one I have. I have also found that Sprunger quit making woodworking tools in about 1984 and I have an address for them but have not yet inquired there. They don’t have a website.

Roge, That's an easy and quick fix to your lathe drive problems. You don't have to take your lathe apart to fix either.
Link belt, or Power Twist belt are what they are called and is just what it is called, a belt made up of links. You can make it about any size you want, will run quieter than a normal V-belt.
Most of the bigger woodworking catalogs have them, but depending on the size of the town you live in go to your local bearing supply house, most of them carry them also. If you are not sure of what I am talking about go to this site and you can see a picture. Search on Belt..... http://craftusa.com/ also any thing related to woodturning you can get at this site. If you want more reference info and to see if there is a woodturning chapter in your area go to this site.. http://www.woodturner.org/
Good luck with the lathe, it's addicting

Rage, look down into the cone pulley and remove the set screw. There's probably another set screw beneath that one.
With those removed and gentle persuasion ,the spindle should come out. Stein.

I agree with koikid; put on a link-type belt. Harbor Freight has them for as little as about $12 for 5' (if you play with the codes and hit the right one). If you don't have to disturb the bearings, then don't.
Be seeing you...
