I,m working on the design of for a small candle stand with a turned column with a hexagonal cross section at the bottom to receive sliding dovetails for the legs. Christian Becksvoort’s article in Fw85 was a help, but I would like to make the largest diameter of the turning a little bit larger than the bottom hex section. Also I would like to make the top either a hexagon or an octagon(not sure which would look better)and wrap it with molding for a dished effect. I don’t know how to lay this out. I am basing the design on one I saw with an 18 inch round top. I would like to use solid stock for the top but have a concern about warping and whether the molding would stay put. Thanks for any help you can offer, Terry

Hi Terry,
Sorry for the news. You can't use solid stock for the top and apply a molding around it. It just won't hold due to wood movement. Look up pie crust tables to see how the traditional guys did it. Solid widths of mahogany carved to produce the flat surface and the molded edge above it. Your idea is nice, but it won't work because of the movement issues in the top which will cause the molding to come off.
As for warping, just make sure that the solid top is securely fastened to your base with some kind of batten and slotted screws to hold it fast while still allowing for movement. Good luck. Gary
