I’ve been thinking of getting some wood delivered sight-unseen because getting to a dealer is tough. No particular species- probably an assortment of hardwoods and some sheet goods.
If I’m not home when this stuff gets delivered, is being out in the heat and sun for the afternoon going to kill it? As an example of the weather right now, it’s 87 degrees out with 85% humidity. Any difference if the wood is rough or already surfaced?
I’m a little cautious on this one. I remember a friend helping me apply finish to a big tabletop years ago. I went inside the house and when I came back out he had moved the whole top out into the driveway in the sun so it would dry faster! The whole top opened up with little checks and cracks all over. Some closed back up, but not all…
Thanks,
Kevin

Probably won't hurt at all. Regardless of whether it sits outside for a few hours or goes directly into your shop, you're still going to have to let the lumber sit for a few weeks to become acclimated to your shop.
Of course, Murphy's law would suggest a 98% probability that if the lumber is sitting outdoors for only 10 minutes even on a day with less than a 1% chance of rain, it will pour cats and dogs for three days.

Oak and other easy to surface check species will do so in no time in the sun. A little breeze will make it worst.
Lately I'd worry more about the wind sending it back where it came from!
Getting the wood off of the truck is a problem for the driver. Leaving it without a signature may be a problem.
Pick it up at the depot or have a neighbor take delivery.
I have noticed that truck drivers are a very nice. Had one volunteer to help me move a bandsaw across 100' of lawn.
