I just bought a Jet 1100 CFM dust collector, and am now shopping for hoses, gates, and T’s. I see that Lee Valley sells a whole kit (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?page=30042&category=1,42401&ccurrency=2&SID=) that looks like it would do the trick, except that everything is 2″ diameter.
Now the page tells me that it “can be used with a shop vacuum (minimum 100 cfm rating and a 2-1/2″ diameter hose inlet) or a central vacuum system,” but I wonder if my 1100 CFM will overpower the small diameter system or generate a dangerous amount of suction at, say, a tablesaw throat.
Anybody have any experiences with this kit, or with smaller diameter hoses for industrial strength DC’s? Should I just break down and buy some 4″ hoses/fittings?
Thanks!
Rob

If you don't use 4" you will restrict the suction and get bad results with your dust collector. That kit is intended for shop vacs.
I had the sneaking suspicion that was the case. I guess I'll have to break down and get some fat 4" hoses and gadgets for them.
Thanks! Rob
I just piped up my shop for dust collection using the same dust collector. I used 4" pvc. The thin stuff you get at home depot, I think it is called S&D. Used some of the 25 feet of hose that came with the dust collector when I bought it for around each machine. I connected the blast gates to the inside of the 4" PVC and hose clamped the hose to the other side. I found that the blast gates were too small to fit tightly into the PVC. At first I just wrapped some duck tape around each blast gate to bring it to the appropriate thickness. I later tried, and liked it better, using a piece of the PVC itself. I cut a small 1" piece and then took a 1/4 cut out of it. It then could be tightened around the blast gate and forced into the pipe giving a nice tight fit.
This was pretty inexpensive (probably around $100 with all fittings, gates and pipe) and so far is working really well.
Another option is to use galvanized metal pipe that you can purchase at Home Depot or Lowes. This is usually found in the Heating supplies section and comes in 4"and 6" diameters. Also there are a variety of fittings, wyes, tees, etc available. Using metal has 2 advantages: you dont have to wrap the pipe with the copper wire to discharge static electricity, and the friction is less. Less friction means more suction at the dust ports.
I dont know whether your dust collector came with 5 micron bags or not, but they are worth the extra money if you purchase the oversized bags like the ones available from Penn State Industries.
Good Luck
