Can anyone tell me a good bit combination and manufacturer for a dovetail bit for the Leigh D4 jig that will cut something other that an 8 degree dovetail? I have seen 14 and 18 degree cutters out there, but am unsure if they would be adequite for 1/2″ drawer sides. Please give me some suggestions.
Thanks, John.

They have a set for the Leigh jig consisting of 4 dovetail bits (two 8 degree, one 14 degree, one 18 degree), 2 straight bits (1/2-inch and 5/16-inch), and a collet reducer. Manufactured by Whiteside, which I believe is the OEM for bits on the Leigh jig. $99.
The bits I got from Leigh are very good quality.
With the Leigh jig, pay attention to what cutters can be used for different applications and different wood thicknesses. The manual and the web site both give recommended (required) bits for different applications. Stick to them and you won't go wrong.
"SLOSapo, what is the thikest material you can cut with the 14 and 18 degree dovetail bits?"
A little under 1/2 inch.
John,
I don't think you can use anything other than an 8 degree bit on the Leigh since the finger slope is set at 8. This is true at least for the through dovetails. You may get away with a different angle for half blind or sliding dovetails but I have never tried it nor would I want to. My experience with steeper angle bits is that they tend to chip out at the very tips of the dovetail due to the short grain situation.

The half blind joints use bits with different angles, depending on the stock thickness. If you don't use the right bit, your HB dovetail won't fit correctly.Recommending the use of "Hide Signatures" option under "My Preferences" since 2005
