anybody made this? got the jig as a gift but havent made the beam….seems i need to buy a piece of 8/4 hardwood because the beam needs to be 3.5 x 1.5 x choose length….stuff that i have found in that size is 6 feet long and usually 6+ inches wide….seems i would waste alot of wood by the time i cut it down to 3 1/2 x 1 1/2….

I just made the beem and I am still playing with it.I bought it to do a blanket chest so I made the beem 40" long so you might make one 40" and one 30". pay close attention to hole locations ,the side stop hole is located 5/16 over from the 4 1/2" line of your first pin plate.if you have any other questions just ask.

i was planning on making the beam so i could do a piece that was about 25'' deep...did you make the beam out of one piece or glue something together? exact dimensions from leigh, 1.5 x 3.5..or did you modify..i bought two pieces of 3/4'' thick poplar and was going to glue them but im worried about drilling and screwing into what would be the joint of the two pieces....i have little to no experience in the WW business, just trying to collect tools and jigs to get started....i agree with your 'mission statement'. I cant possibly justify paying several thousand dollars for what they sell at Pottery barn or crate & barrell when i could buy the tools and the materials for half the selling price, and the satisfaction and knowledge gained in building it is priceless.
I made the beam out of 8/4 maple I don't know if you are able to mill your own lumber but you don't want to use a soft wood or laminate two pieces together, also the milling of the beam needs to be very exact flat straight and 90 deg. to the face.there is a revision drawing of the beam you can print though the leigh web site.if you have any other questions you should e-mail me at [email protected]
