Hi,
I’d like to apply some lettering to a box made of simple birch plywood by means of a template and quick drying black paint out of a spray can. How should I prepare the surface of the plywood to keep the paint from bleeding across the delicate borderlines of my lettering (font = Stencil 60)?

The best way for me to stencil is to use an extremely dry stenciling brush, slow is good !

Seal the wood first. Dewaxed shellac would be my choice.

Lets say you're going to finish this with X. Put the X on it and let dry. Now put your template on. Here's where I might recommend frisket film - art supply store. Or whatever your template is, so long as it can seal down well to the surface.
Now wipe/brush whatever the X over the template and let dry. Any seepage or leaks you might get, you get in the finish coat, rather than the black spray. Leave template in place. Now spray your paint. Remove template. Voila.
