How about inlaying rare earth magnets? A 1/2″ magnet has a 9 lb pull (a 1″d. has a 30#!) Check out the Lee Valley site for ideas: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=42348&cat=1,42363
Might take a strong rat to get by a couple of 1″ ones, eh?

Good idea, cheap way might be to bore a couple blind holes through the sides into the lid and using a stiff piece of wire.
Thanks, I did think of using a dowel; wire could be attached to the box.
are you telling me the rats *lift* a 3/4" piece of plywood? or is it that the lids get knocked askew and enter ratus.
Might be a combination of iguanas and rats; also the lids have one hinge in the middle so they can get slightly askew.
There are about 500 boxes.
Cost is an issue.
