Has anyone used the Lie-Nielsen mortise chisels? I really don’t want to ignite the skill/tool debate that generated a 100+ posts. Please, just let me know if you’ve used the chisels; what you thought of them; and how they compare with other high-end mortise chisels on the market.

Good question. I am ready to get some and would like to hear from anyone with first-hand experience.

I have one...very nice tool, like everything they make. Much smaller than a "traditional" (for lack of a better term) mortise chisel. I also have a heavy-duty Sorby, but prefer the L-N.You might also check out the new Isles' offered by Tools For Working Wood, which is a pig sticker type...roughly twice the cost of the L-N, however. Haven't used one of those, though Joel (owner) offers a money back guarantee.RR
I have the 1/4-inch Isles "English Pattern" (Pig sticker) mortice chisel. It's massive and well made. It works beautifully.
I recommend them highly (FWIW).

A correction to my first post:The pig stickers are made by Ray Iles (not Isles) and range in price from $54 for the 3/16" to $98 for the 1/2". To my knowledge, Tools For Working Wood is currently the only place that sells these on this side of the pond. Here's a link:http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/Merchant/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=toolshop&Product_Code=MS-MORT.XX&Category_Code=TBMCIf it makes any difference, all of the sizes are in stock, as opposed to the 4+ month wait for the L-N's. Given the outstanding customer service I've always received from Joel, I would'nt hesitate to give one a try. If you don't like it, you can always send it back and continue waiting for the L-N.Just a thought...RR
I purchased one of the LN mortise chisels last January. Read about them hear and ordered one before they showed up in the catalog or on the website. I've never used a better tool. It was mirror finished and razor sharp when I received it. It cuts like a dream, holds an edge well, and resharpens with minimal effort. Hand feel subjective but I think this chisel fits my hand perfectly.
Enjoy.
