Hey all-
I am making a dog food holder/feeder for my boy Shadow. He’s a big boy 90+ lbs and a lab. Basically what I am trying to say is that he can make a mess drinking from his bowl.
What I was hoping to get some best practices on is how to set the bowls in the top so they are flush but yet keep out the water and to some degree help the food stay “fresh”. Any help in how to best seal this is very much appreciated.

Derek,
No help here, but thanks for attacking this problem. My lab is about 70 pounds and turns 1 next week. Have been thinking I have to address the same issue soon. Please post pics when you figure it out!!!

Derek, I can think of only 3 options:
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thanks for the suggestions FG but, I am resigned to getting water all over everything. He really likes to take his head out of the bowl with a mouthful of water running out! Oh well, it's a good thing he's so darn cute!
I was really thinking more about how to keep the water that's on the top staying on the top and not seeping under the lip of the bowl and down into the food.
maybe I can make a raised lip, but then would I need to worry about water getting in the joint?
Can you give us an idea of what the design is? Sounds like a 2-story job, rather than one on the left, one on the right?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
It's basically a box (cherry with maple ply) with a hinged lid. On the left is the water bowl, on the right is the food bowl. Inside the box is kibble. (think a kids toy box but with food!)
Ahhhhh, I see, sort of...don't have the total picture though. You're going to need a waterproof barrier. Also, remember that if the water sits on a piece of wood, even finished, long enough it's going to cause problems. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Don't know where she found it, but my mother has one that is sort of a "bowl in a bowl" that she uses in the car when they're traveling. Looks like a good design; only about a 3" dia opening actually has water in it. I'll ask, and try to get a brand name.
