I have been asked about stripping the finish off 4 high back chairs that have some applied carving detail. I am in the lower Hudson Valley of New York. Anyone know of any commercial shops that do this anymore in either downstate NY, NJ or Connecticut? Years ago there were two shops not far from me that did this but I suspect with the tougher environmental standards these shops may now be harder to find. So if you can help me find someone I would appreciate it. If I can’t fine anyone, I will do it myself but it will be a slow and messy process. Thanks

Look for a large antiques or architectural salvage outfit and ask there. I had a few doors done through a connection at Golden Oldies in Flushing Queens years back. G O is not there any more, but they "knew a guy" and probably profited from hooking me up.
Ben will probably see this. Everyone has said that he keeps a list of all the stripper's phone numbers in Connecticut.
Good one, John. I must be getting old, it took a bit to sink in.
I believe there is one in the Corning/ Elmira NY area, Oldies but Goodies, 607-562-7415
Dip and Strip in Brooklyn. There are several more. I haven't had it done for several years and have a couple of antique doors that I may use sometime so out of curiosity I looked up in my area who does it and found several places in seconds. Being in California I thought maybe there was some new rule that killed that business but they are still out there. Did the same thing but for NYC since someone asked and the same thing happened.
