Location Woodworking Store N. of Houston
Sometime back, on one of the forums, heard about a woodworking store north of Houston, Texas. I think it was somewhere in the general area of Spring, TX and I-45. Can anyone tell me the name of the store and/or the location? Would appreciate any info. Will be in that area Tue. and Wed. this week.

Drew--Wow! Imagine getting my first answer from a person in Utah who just saw the location this morning. I would never have anticipated such a quick response from someone so far away from Houston area. Fantastic.
Thank you.

That shop in nowhere near the location you asked about. It's a great shop, but I wasn't going to mention it because it is a lot of miles South of where you will be. It is easy enough to get to though.
Thanks, Scott. Actually, I will be in Sugarland late Tues. afternoon and Wednesday morning. However, I am told the store is now closed and out of business.
Thanks again.

This is the store I was thinking of. Very much open and ready for business.

Billy,
I tried to reply earlier but got an error message. That Woodwright store was located at I-45 and Spring Cypress. It closed about six months ago, I think.
Closest to Spring now might be Woodcrafters at 13155 Northwest Freeway, 713.690.8508
Are you from the Spring area? I was thinking about starting a woodworker's club here. I'm sure there must be a lot of folks who enjoy taking beautiful, highly figured, exotic woods and turning them into sawdust and firewood.
Anyone interested, please reply. Thanks.
In addition to the Woodcrafters store on 290 (northwest side of town), I got a flyer for a new Woodcrafters store opening up on the southwest side very close to the Cutting Edge - but I've not been there and don't know if it is open yet. Near the center of town, there is a Rocklers. I'm not aware of any woodworking stores on the north side. If you like to drool over wood, stop by one of several hardwood dealers - Clark's Hardwood on 5th Street in the Heights (close to downtown) probably has the greatest selection of exotics and you can easily spend a good bit of time (and money) there.
Ahhh... Clark's...
I think they own my house and my first born...
I was talking to the Woodcraft folks not long ago, and they are excited about the new store opening up soon--I think in the spring. They also have plans for another store in the Humble/Kingwood area. That's great because that's where I live. It's a long haul to the 290 store. Rockler on 59 doesn't carry the line of hand tools that Woodcraft does. Cutting Edge was the first Steel City dealer in Houston, and I bought my 14" bandsaw from them. They carry a nice assortment of just about everything. Good store. The new Woodcraft store opened last week. As of this weekend they didn't yet have all the shelves stocked, but they're probably at about 80%. It's a bigger store than the one up on 290.I like the fact that there's another option on this side of town, but I wish they'd had a bit more class than to open up their store literally across the highway from Cutting Edge. Independent store owners have it rough enough competing with chain operations, and in the long run we all lose if the independents don't survive. Look at what's happened over the last few decades to real hardware stores thanks to the likes of the BORG. Yes they have lower prices on a lot of merchandise, but much of it is crap. When was the last time anyone saw a real quality tool there like what was available from a full service hardware store? For me Woodcraft will be the source of last resort, with independents and the web getting the bulk of my business.Cliff
I hear you. I've enjoyed shopping and buying from Cutting Edge, and think it's a quality store. I can't imagine that with a city the size of Houston and the number of woodworkers here there is a need to be that cutthroat. I would rather them have built a store out here by me. Now you have Rockler, Woodcraft and Cutting Edge within 10 minutes of each other. Not very good distribution. Maybe Cutting Edge will kick tail, who knows? Alas, I live in Humble, so I'm 30 minutes away at best from all of them. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
Actually I think Cutting Edge will do alright - they carry a lot of really great quality products, and a lot of things that the chains don't. They're also more focused on turning than the others, so I'd guess that they should pull in a fair number of folks who aren't well served by the generalist operations.Cliff
They are the only dealer in town that carries a decent selection of Veritas/Lee Valley products. I like that. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
I'm moving off Sawdust/Rayford this week, I would be interested in a woodworker's club
